Pura Vida – Costa Rica Essentials‎

Day 1

Meet your fellow adventurers and tour leader at 6 pm at the joining hotel in San Jose. Be sure to have your insurance documents and passports available for presentation to your tour leader. After your tour briefing, you may want to go out together for dinner at one of the many renowned restaurants nearby.

Day 2

A morning departure from the hustle and bustle of San Jose, we will leave from one of the main bus terminals for the stunning beaches of Manuel Antonio. This may be the second smallest park in Costa Rica, but this is where you want to be to see the most abundance of wildlife. This afternoon is free to enjoy the area, make sure you keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. Tonight we will meet for dinner at 7.00 pm and to discuss optional excursions for Monteverde.

Day 3

An early start will see us as one of the first groups in Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio! Our guide is ready with his telescope to spot monkeys (squirrel, howler and white faced capuchin), sloths (2 and 3 toed), iguanas, racoons and more! Be sure to bring your camera as our guide can take some stunning shots through said scope! Our tour will take about two hours; after that you are free to enjoy the beaches inside Manuel Antonio or perhaps take an optional excursion to see the Scarlett Macaws who populate this area frequently. A 4.30pm meet-up will see us off to the famous ‘El Avion’ restaurant for sundowners and dinner!

Day 4

Our private bus today will see us depart the humid jungle atmosphere and head for the cloud forests of Monteverde! First we take a stop at the Rio Tarcoles Bridge, a fabulous spot to watch giant crocodiles that inhabit this river. We will also have time for a local snack, which we can promise you is not crocodile. From there, the views go from stunning, to absolutely breathtaking! Our arrival in Monteverde is timed perfectly for lunch and booking for tomorrow’s tour options. After lunch we will make our way to the Monteverde Reserve, where our guide will be waiting to help us find the elusive Quetzal bird.

Day 5

Today you have a free day to enjoy the wonderful, lush, green area of Monteverde, and take in the activities you booked yesterday! Our top picks are zip lining, horseback riding, bridge walking and coffee and chocolate tours. We will meet at 6.30pm to head out for our BBQ/bonfire dinner.

Day 6

This morning we depart on an early bus for one of the loveliest drives! On a predominantly dirt road, we will be treated to jaw-dropping landscapes through rolling green hills, with views to the Pacific and Caribbean. We will stop for some photo opportunities. The ride takes us to the shores of Lake Arenal, where our boat will be waiting to take us across. Forty minutes of gorgeous views and calm waters! Once we disembark, we will drive another 20 minutes to our hotel. After check in, we will meet with our friends at Desafio Adventure company to see decide on activity options for tomorrow! We will then go straight for dinner.

Day 7

Today is a free day to enjoy the activities that we booked last night. If white water rafting, canyoneering, wildlife spotting or caving aren’t your thing, there are hot springs, bike tours and more. Remember, this is the adventure capital of Costa Rica!

Day 8

We leave after breakfast for a drive across to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. Arriving in La Pavona, we board a boat that will take us deep into Tortuguero National Park. We will arrive at our lodge for the next two nights, check in and confirm our time to visit the turtles tonight (seasonal). The following species of turtles have a tendency to return during the following months: Olive Ridley – July to September; Loggerhead – May to August; Hawkesbill – May to November; Green – June to October; Leatherback – March to July. As with all nature, it’s never a guarantee but if we don’t see turtles we will still see an abundance of other wildlife. Our lodge is rustic and located in a very special place, between the river and the ocean. Absolutely magic!

Day 9

An early departure (don’t worry, coffee will be waiting), we will head out on a boat trip with our local guide for some early morning wildlife spotting. Caimans, crocodiles, toucans, macaws, monkeys and more, will be waiting to greet us this morning. We will return to the lodge around 8.30am for breakfast and a rest until around midday, when we will head into the village of Tortuguero. Free time for lunch before meeting at the visitors centre for more information on the turtles.

Day 10

After breakfast, we will loaded the boat for our scenic day-trip that will eventually end in San Jose. This is another great journey for which you will want to have your cameras ready. We will pass through canals and rivers, spotting more wildlife, before popping out onto the Moin River, and eventually the port of Moin. From there we will be taken to the bus station in Limon, for a three-hour journey back to San Jose.

Day 11

If you are flying out today, please refer to your tour leader for the best way to get to the airport. For those continuing on with the tour to Panama, please remember there will be a group meeting tonight at 6.00 pm here in the hotel.
