Today is a free day for you to enjoy one of the many activities on offer! The Los Tercios Waterfalls & Suchitoto town tour, with English an speaking guide, takes you to the waterfalls of Los Tercios, a unique formation of hexagonal slices of rock that looks almost like a modern piece of art and then an historical and cultural exposure of the town’s rich history, from the Dominican era to the civil war of the 1980’s (min. 4 people). A lovely afternoon boat ride on Lake Suchitlan to Bird Island gives you the opportunity to watch the migratory birds, and their nesting areas, with great views and, if you like, a cold beer or gaseosa across the lake, while enjoying some serious sunset gazing (min 6 people). A Cinquera walk option is possible instead of either the boat tour or Los Tercios & Suchitoto Town tour.
This more active option takes us to a rural forested area, with some significant hiking that ends up near a waterfall with a large pool, followed by a guided visit of some interesting murals and the war museum (min 4 people).

From there, our private vehicle will be waiting to take us all the way to Leon, Nicaragua. The drive takes us through the heart of Honduras, filled with locals going about their daily lives. But, to us, it may seem intriguing, for example, when we see enormous iguanas been sold roadside or chicken buses packed to the brim with people just going about their every day lives. After the border formalities, we drive for about two more hours to Leon. After checking in to our hotel, we will meet for dinner and then have the option of taking part in Rum tasting: Nicaragua is home to some of the world’s best rum!

Day 10

What an epic day we have lined up today! About 8am we will leave the hotel and drive approximately 45 minutes to the ranger station of Cerro Negro Volcano. It’s Central Americas youngest volcano, but still very active. Once we have signed in and learned a little about the volcano, we will drive to the base of the 45 minute to one hour hike to the top. If you are boarding down, you will be carrying your own board unless you pay a small about to have a porter carry it up. Once there, we will drop our safety gear and walk around the crater for some great photo ops! Then it’s back to the edge to suit up and make our way down. Boarding down takes around 5 minutes, and walking down around 15 minutes. From there, it’s time for some fruit, a cold drink and a drive back to Leon. In the afternoon, we will depart for the Telica Twilight tour. The 1.5-hour drive in a 4WD vehicle will go past small villages and up, up, up until we can’t drive any more. From there, we will receive a safety briefing (Telica is VERY active), receive our snacks and have time to put on some more mosquito repellent. Cameras at the ready and off we go. The hike is around an hour, with some wonderful photo opportunities back towards Leon, Volcano Cerro Negro, San Cristobal and more. We will check out the crater before sunset, then take our places to watch the sunset and then head back to the crater to try to catch a glimpse of the lava. The walk back down to our vehicle will be by flashlight before the drive back to Leon.
