Giving Back – MS Bike

Categories: Announcements

While West Adventures is focused on delivering the best value and experiences to our guests, we also believe that a company needs to be socially responsible, give back to the community and show they care. With this in mind we are very excited to announce that we have begun working with a charity close to our hearts, MS Bike.

Today we see the highest rate of Multiple Sclerosis ever. In response to this MS Bike is the largest fundraising cycling series in North America and it’s the experience of a lifetime! Every year since 1989, cyclists of all ages and fitness levels across Canada get together to raise awareness for this debilitating disease and money for a cure.

We would specifically like to make you aware of the Okanagan route happening September 8-9. You can join as an individual, as a team or just volunteer your time.

If you talk to anyone who’s visited the Okanagan, you’ll know that touring your way through its many wineries is an experience not to be missed. In a place with over 50 wineries to choose from there is no doubt that you’ll be able to fill your time sipping in the sun, sampling some of the finest wines that BC has to offer.

Could it get any better? Surprisingly, the answer is yes.

Once each year, the route between wineries is transformed into the most exciting bike tour that the Okanagan has to offer: The MS Bike Okanagan Experience.

The MS Bike Okanagan Experience is a two-day bike tour that visits nine wineries and farms, where you’ll find breathtaking views through rolling hills. Each winery on the tour offers complimentary samples, and snack for you to refuel along your way. When traveling on a bike, you truly have the best seat in the house to experience everything that nature has to offer. The sights, smells and tastes of the Okanagan are something to experience, and there truly is no better way than The MS Bike to do it all.

And, if great wine, great views, and a great place isn’t enough to convince you that this is the wine tour you’ve been looking for, the fact that The MS Bike is hosted by the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada is, for many people, the best part. All the money raised at MS Bike is used to support programs and services for people living with MS and their loved ones, to support critical research that is being done to improve treatments, and to find a cure.
So, what are you waiting for?

This year West Adventures is providing a free Okanagan Escape trip to be drawn at the MS Bike Okanagan event. Maybe we’ll see you there!

What is MS?
Canada has the highest rate of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the world, with an estimated 1 in 340 Canadians living with the disease. While it is most often diagnosed in young adults aged 15 to 40, younger children and older adults are also diagnosed with the disease.

MS is currently classified as an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord). The disease attacks myelin, the protective covering of the nerves, causing inflammation and often damaging the myelin. Myelin is necessary for the transmission of nerve impulses through nerve fibres. If damage to myelin is slight, nerve impulses travel with minor interruptions; however, if damage is substantial and if scar tissue replaces the myelin, nerve impulses may be completely disrupted, and the nerve fibres themselves can be damaged.

MS is unpredictable and can cause symptoms such as extreme fatigue, lack of coordination, weakness, tingling, impaired sensation, vision problems, bladder problems, cognitive impairment and mood changes. Its effects can be physical, emotional and financial. Currently there is no cure, but each day researchers are learning more about what causes MS and are zeroing in on ways to prevent it.
